Typically, Ketubahs are original drawings or paintings and more often, a print made from the original drawing or painting into which the appropriate text is placed. Sometimes the text is preprinted, and blank spaces are left in which to personalize the Ketubah. Recently, Ketubahs are more often printed using the Giclee' process and are more easily personalized since each print is created 'on demand'. And some Ketubot are created entirely by hand, either hand painted, drawn or assembled, such as copper Ketubot.
Many of our Ketubah designs start their life in a kiln. The Ketubah is designed by taking shards of special decorative glass and fusing them together in a kiln to create the background image. Once we have a design we really like, it is photographed. That image is then adjusted so that it shows the true beauty of the original glass. We then embellish that image by adding borders, titles and the text the client chooses. The finished product is printed on archival watercolor paper. Some of our designs begin as a painting as explained above..... however.....
Here's the difference.....every one of our finished Ketubah designs are embellished with actual glass! We reproduce one or more interesting areas of the original image in glass. These glass elements are then permanently attached to the Giclee' print. The print is then mounted and matted using a shadow box technique so that the Ketubah is now ready to be framed and properly shows off the artwork and glass elements. Click here to see one matted.
In addition to the Ketubah, we offer matching accessories, such as jewelery that will match your Ketubah, a matching Mezuzah, gift prints, invitations and more!
So stay tuned..... Glass Ketubah is a concept developed by Skip & Illene Dyrda. Skip is an accomplished muralist and specializes in the Trompe L'oeil technique. He is also an accomplished digital artist and designer, creating graphic designs and websites for a wide variety of clients. He has been designing Ketubot for over six years. Much of his work can be recognized and identified by his trademark 'red string'.
Illene, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is the glass magician as well as being a talented painter (and a great mom). It shows in the beautiful backgrounds she has created for many of our Ketubahs.
